I’ve been feeling really arty over the past few days. I want to make my own comic over the summer holidays.

ZINE BUT NOT HEARD (FEELINGS)

Half an hour zine challenge that I set myself. I found a tiny sketchbook that I made a while ago in my room, so I decided to finally put it to use.

Made with biro, pencil, eye shadow and perfume (sprayed on to the pages, to bleed the ink).

The booklet is finished…I’m exhausted.

We’re getting 150 of these printed tomorrow, for the funeral on Monday. I’m just really happy that everyone will have something to take away with them. I managed to get one contribution, from our friends Harry and Louis (the back page).

There’s a little pun in there as well. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

I can’t believe I spent so much time doing this. I’m still tired from ordering the pages last night/early this morning.

I very shamefully haven’t made it through an entire book, that wasn’t a graphic novel or set text in years. I borrowed this book from work on Tuesday and sat down yesterday and forced myself to begin reading it immediately. I’ve just finished reading it, all wrapped up in a purple blanket. What a beautiful book.

I went a bit wild today, I put it down to the free energy drink.

I decided to do some prints with the practise lino cut I made on Friday. I didn’t have any ink, so I just used some normal black paint, which meant the outcomes were quite messy, faded or didn’t work at all. I quite liked how some of the prints came out though. I experimented with different ways of applying paint to the lino and how this affected the printed image. Halfway through, I started scratching back into the prints with a pen and found I could create very fine lines by pushing the paint out of the way. Using cardboard first and then some hardboard I made some images purely out of the mark-making over paint method.

My uni desk is now full of tiny pieces of paper/board and is covered in paint. That’s how it should always be. :)

Some of the other non-timed drawings that people did. :)

Some of the other non-timed drawings that people did. :)

It was a warm, sunny day in Manchester, so the drawing group headed down to the park outside university to do some scribbling.

I got everyone to draw for 10 and 15 seconds at a time on long off-cuts of paper found in the printing room by tutor. I think everyone had a lot of fun with this task, so I made the drawings into a little book.

If anyone has ever told you,

that you CAN’T draw, laughed at something you drew, made you feel bad for this. Forget that, let’s move on.

If you’ve ever made yourself feel bad, comparing yourself to someone else’s drawings, told yourself ‘I CAN’T draw’ and abandoned drawing forever. Let’s change that.

Everyone can draw, drawing is about looking. Seeing what is in front of you and breaking it down into shapes, lines and forms is drawing in itself. It’s much more than creating a finished, polished image, it’s more about the concentration you held for the duration of the drawing, how you felt yourself get excited when it’s going the way you’d like it to and also the feeling when it goes wrong, but you still carry on.

I’d like you to feel good about drawing. You can all draw and you can all feel good, I promise.
